When you’re looking for a family holiday, Denmark is probably not the first destination that comes to mind, but maybe it should be. With a culture centred on outdoor and family activities, Denmark offers a great number of family activities for everyone to enjoy.

Here are our top five reasons to make Denmark your next family destination:

#1. You can build something from scratch at Legoland

Located next to the original Lego Factory, Legoland is popular with both children and adults. Open from April to October, Legoland is the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. The attractions and rides contain over 50 million LEGO blocks. Younger children will enjoy DUPLO Land—named after the larger blocks made for them.

You can even stay right there at the 4-star Legoland resort. The restaurant even features a children’s buffet—sized for them and stocked with all their favourites.

Travelling as a family can be expensive! Check out these money saving tips for travelling on a budget.

#2. You can follow in Viking footsteps

Try your hand at working with Viking tools at the Viking Ship Museum. About 35 minutes from Copenhagen, the museum offers the chance to see a ship being constructed test your own skills.

The National Museum offers a special Children’s Museum section showing what life was like on a Viking ship. Then you can visit Viking villages in Alberslund or Frederikssund to see how the Vikings lived and worked.

Want to continue on with your Viking adventures? Then why not catch a flight to Norway and explore more of what this Nordic region has to offer.

#3. You can visit the hot spots devoted to Hans Christian Andersen

From the Little Mermaid to The Ugly Duckling and The Little Match Girl, Hans Christian Andersen remains popular with children around the world. You can easily build a day (or more) around touring Copenhagen and visiting sites related to their famous author. The most popular are the Hans Christian Andersen House and the Little Mermaid Statue. You can also find several statues of Andersen himself around town—though sadly he is not as popular as his creation.

#4. You can ride a bike (safely)

Copenhagen aims to become the first carbon-neutral city in the next decade and judging by the number of bikers, they are well on their way. The local trains even have dedicated carriages for bikes and prams. Most hotels have bikes to rent including the cargo tricycles.

If you’re already a cycling family, Denmark has child-friendly cycling holidays including gentle terrain, realistic distances, and interesting scenery.

#5. You can meet Santa Claus

Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, you can meet Santa in Bakken—home of the World Santa Claus Congress. Held each July, it’s the largest Santa convention in the world. Every day of the convention, you can see a parade with all the Santas through the town. There’s also a Santa pentathlon, a Santa obstacle course, and a saltwater bath (complete with Santa bathing suits).
