Our COVID-19 travel insurance benefits

New Single Trip Options Plan policyholders will now receive the below additional travel insurance cover for common coronavirus pandemic scenarios:


Cover for COVID-19 Medical Costs*#~

Cover is provided for medical treatment expenses and ambulance transportation if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner within Australia* or New Zealand.


Cover for COVID-19 Cancellations*

Cover is provided for a number of unforeseeable amendment and cancellation costs relating to COVID-19 that are outside of your control if you’re travelling within New Zealand or Australia* and have added cancellation cover to your policy.


Cover for Additional COVID-19 Expenses*#

Cover is provided for a variety of additional costs should you find your trip plans within Australia* or New Zealand are cut short or change as a result of various COVID-19-related reasons.

 

Our COVID-19 Medical Expenses cover~#

We understand many travellers are concerned about the financial impact of catching coronavirus while they’re away from home.

To help ease your worries and help keep you travelling, our coronavirus travel insurance benefits can provide cover for your medical costs if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner while travelling within New Zealand or Australia* on an Options Plan Single Trip policy. This cover includes costs resulting from any medical treatment and ambulance transportation you require when suffering from COVID-19.

Unfortunately, we cannot pay for any medical costs resulting from coronavirus if you’re a New Zealand resident travelling to or within any country other than New Zealand or Australia*.

Our COVID-19 Amendment or Cancellation Costs cover

We always advise travellers buy their travel insurance policy as soon as they book their trip, and this advice remains true during the coronavirus pandemic, too. When you purchase a domestic or international travel insurance policy early on and add cancellation cover to your policy, you’re immediately covered for a number of amendment and cancellation costs.

If you’re travelling within New Zealand or Australia* and are a Single Trip Options Plan policyholder, we can provide cover for a number of coronavirus-related cancellation and amendment costs. We hope this gives you extra confidence to book an upcoming trip knowing you’ve got coronavirus cancellation cover* as part of your policy.

Cover is provided for you if you:

  • are diagnosed by a qualified medical practitioner with COVID-19 and can no longer travel

  • are directed by local public health authority into a period of quarantine because they have classified you as having contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19 and you can no longer travel

  • need to amend or cancel your trip because your relative or business partner is diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and the level of infection is life-threatening

Cover is provided for you if your travelling companion is:

  • diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and cannot travel and you no longer wish to travel as a result
  • directed by a local public health authority into a period of quarantine and cannot travel and you no longer wish to travel as a result

Cover is provided for you if the person you’re due to stay with is:

  • diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and you can no longer stay with them
  • directed by a local public health authority into a period of quarantine and you can no longer stay with them

Cover is provided for you if your prepaid costs are affected, such as:

  • the accommodation you planned to stay at is shut down or closed because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the premises and hygiene measures are required
  • the destination activity venue (such as a ski venue, theme park or cooking school) is closed because of COVID-19

Cover is provided for you if you’re an essential health care worker whose:

  • planned leave is revoked by your employer as a result of COVID-19-related reasons

Our COVID-19 Additional Expenses cover#

It doesn’t matter how much time and effort you put into planning your trip, the unexpected can always happen when you’re away from home. This was true prior to the coronavirus pandemic and it’s still true for travellers who continue to explore in a world where COVID-19 exists.

To help you navigate a number of unexpected costs that may arise from COVID-19, our coronavirus coverage helps protect you from a number of scenarios that may result in unexpected costs.

If you’re a Single Trip Options Plan policyholder travelling within New Zealand or Australia*, we can provide cover for additional expenses incurred if:

  • you are diagnosed with COVID-19 in Australia* and/or you are directed by a local public health authority into a period of quarantine in Australia because they have classified you as having contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19
  • your non-travelling relative or business partner is diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical practitioner and the treating doctor confirms the level of infection is life-threatening and you need to return home
  • the person you were due to stay with is diagnosed with COVID-19 and is directed to enter a period of quarantine within their own home
  • your pre-paid accommodation is shutdown or closes as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak on its premises and hygiene measures are required

Our COVID-19 Travel Insurance Benefit Exclusions

Unfortunately, our coronavirus travel insurance benefits can’t cover absolutely every scenario that may occur as a result of the global pandemic. We encourage you to read the Options Plan Policy Wording document before you consider purchasing our travel insurance to ensure it’s adequate for you and your trip.

We will not pay for any claims arising from or caused by COVID-19 if:

  • you’re an Options Plan Annual Multi-Trip policyholder
  • you’re travelling to a destination outside of New Zealand or Australia*
  • you encounter travel or accommodation costs or expenses as a result of a government or public health authority directing you into a period of mandatory quarantine
  • the government bans travel before or during travel such as: “Do Not Travel” travel warnings; government-directed border closures; or mandatory quarantine or self-isolation requirements related to cross area, border, region or territory travel.
