Domestic Travel Insurance New Zealand

Protect your New Zealand holiday with Domestic cover

Most people know the value of international travel insurance. Did you know it is just as important to have domestic cover when travelling around New Zealand? Whether you are going on a family holiday to Queenstown or enjoying a long weekend in Wellington, travel with peace of mind with a Domestic Plan from Cover-More. If you're in need of some travel inspiration, have a look at our top destination picks for exploring New Zealand. To help you out, we have put together a list of commonly asked questions about our travel insurance. Check out our Domestic Travel Insurance FAQs for more information.

Why buy Domestic travel insurance?

More than one third of domestic travellers experience an unexpected circumstance that can leave them out of pocket. Your luggage can be stolen as easily in Christchurch as it can in Cairo. If your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, it does not matter if you were travelling to Auckland or Amsterdam.

Here are some real-life Cover-More stories of customers who were able to claim under their domestic policy:

  • An airline lost a customer’s suitcase and the items were not recoverable. Luggage Value: $2,500
  • A customer’s rental car was written off after a third party collision. Rental Car Insurance Excess: $4,000

There are always risks when you travel even on domestic trips. Find out how affordable cover can be by getting a quote online or call our team on (0800) 500 225. We can help you find the plan that best suits your needs.

Types of Domestic cover

Cover-More is able to offer you either the Domestic or the Domestic Cancellation plan for travel within New Zealand. Both policies currently have a $25 excess that applies to each claimable event.

The Domestic plan provides comprehensive travel insurance designed for domestic travel. Customise the plan to best suit you. You can add-on protection for Winter Sports or increase your luggage limits.  The Domestic plan includes benefits that can cover:

  • Travel delays
  • Trip cancellation or amendments
  • Luggage and travel documents
  • Rental car insurance excess
  • Loss of income
  • Personal liability and more!

If you have a tight budget, the Domestic Cancellation plan offers basic travel insurance. This can protect you against the loss of pre-paid deposits and cancellation fees. No other benefits apply to Domestic Cancellation policies. It can cover you for:

  • Additional expenses, Amendment or Cancellation costs up to $1,500

If you are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand, consider our Annual Multi-Trip policies. You can travel with peace of mind knowing any trip more than 250 km from your home is protected. To help find the right travel insurance call us on (0800) 500 225.

Cover-More policies can offer coverage in case you need to cancel your trip within New Zealand for an unexpected reason. The Domestic Plan has a benefit for amendments and cancellation costs up to $10,000. For a lower premium, you can select a Domestic Cancellation policy. This provides cancellation coverage up to $1,500. Make sure you read the Policy Documents so you are aware of what is and is not covered by our travel insurance.

Medical cover

Our Domestic Plan can provide you with cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. This is for treatment provided in New Zealand. It only applies up to 12 months from when you suffered a disabling injury, sickness or disease. Travel insurance protects you from unforeseen events. Routine medical or dental treatments, prenatal visits and continuation of treatments are not covered.

Cover for existing medical conditions

We automatically cover a range of existing medical conditions (EMC) - including asthma, epilepsy, gastric reflux and more! Read the Policy Wording for a full list of the conditions we automatically cover. If your existing medical conditions are not all automatically covered, you may complete an online medical assessment to determine if cover is available. Other travel insurance benefits unrelated to your EMC still apply, even if cover cannot be provided for your specific condition/s.

Domestic cruises

Cruises are a great holiday option for families, seniors and everyone else in between. If you are about to set sail on a domestic cruise, consider purchasing travel insurance. All of our policies automatically include cover for cruises so you can sit back and enjoy the sea breeze.

From becoming seasick to delayed luggage, things don’t always go to plan on your trip. Did you know that any accidents or injuries on board the ship are not covered by ACC? The cost of transporting you home won’t be covered by ACC either. That is where travel insurance comes in! Take out a Cover-More plan so you can travel with peace of mind.

Travelling while pregnant

Being pregnant does not necessarily mean you have to stop travelling. Cover-More can provide travel insurance for pregnancy up to the 24th week (23 weeks, 6 days). If you are buying travel insurance while pregnant, you will need to fill in a medical assessment to apply for cover if:

  • You have experienced complications with your current pregnancy or a previous one;
  • It is a multiple pregnancy e.g. twins or triplets; or
  • Conception was medically assisted e.g. using fertility treatment such as IVF or hormone therapies.

If you purchased your travel insurance before finding out you were pregnant, you will not need to do anything. Keep in mind that you will have to provide supporting documentation from your doctor if you become unfit to travel and need to claim for cancellation.

Keep in mind that there is no cover for childbirth or the health of a newborn child on any of our Plans. Other policy benefits can safeguard your trip against expenses arising from lost luggage, travel delays and cancellation.

Why not consider a domestic holiday if you want to squeeze in a babymoon and take one last trip? It is a great way to relax and see more of our beautiful country. Make sure you are aware of any airline restrictions for pregnant travellers before booking your getaway.

Senior travellers

Now that you have retired and your family have flown the nest, your ‘golden years’ are an ideal time to see the world. Start with domestic destinations that you have always wanted to see. Cover-More can provide quality seniors travel insurance if you are younger than 99 years old. Just remember that reduced limits may apply for travellers over 70 years of age. Have a chat to us about coverage options by calling (0800) 500 225 or get a quote online.

Rental car insurance excess cover

A great way to see New Zealand is by hitting the road! For your next domestic holiday, you may want to consider hiring a rental car. Our Domestic Plan automatically provides up to $4,000 cover if you become liable to pay a rental car insurance excess. Keep in mind that no cover for rental car insurance excess is available under the Domestic Cancellation plan.

This cover applies if you:

  • Hire a rental car;
  • Are the nominated driver on the rental car agreement;
  • Are in control of the vehicle in the instance it is damaged or stolen; and
  • Have comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the rental car during the hire period.

As Cover-More will cover the rental car excess up to the policy limit; you may not have to pay an extra fee to the rental car company to reduce your excess. This means more money in your pocket to spend while on holidays!

Please keep in mind that under Cover-More plans, we will not pay for:

  • Any damage or theft, arising from the operation of a rental car in violation of the terms of the rental agreement.
  • Any damage sustained to a rental car while being driven on an unsealed surface.
  • Administration costs or loss of use penalties.

We strongly encourage you to read the Policy Documents so you are aware of what is included in the plans.
