Domestic Travel Insurance FAQs

It is great to see you want to protect your domestic trip. Things can go wrong as easily in Dunedin as they can in Dubai. To help you out, we have put together some questions that are frequently asked about domestic travel insurance.

Visit our domestic travel insurance page for more useful information about coverage options.

Do I need travel insurance in New Zealand?

Mishaps and events outside of your control can happen as easily in New Zealand as they can while you are on holiday overseas. You can get cover for luggage and travel documents, rental vehicle insurance excess, additional expenses, and amendment or cancellation costs.

What is my excess for the Domestic Plan?

A $25 excess applies to our Options Domestic Plan and Options Domestic Cancellation Plan. You are not able to change this amount. An excess is the first part of a claim that we will not pay. The excess amount is applied to each separate claimable event.

Is there any cover for medical expenses in New Zealand?

Yes. Our Options Domestic Plan can offer cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. Treatment must be provided in New Zealand. Cover only applies up to 12 months from when you first suffered a disabling injury, disease, or sickness. Routine visits, check-ups, and continuation of treatments are not covered. This is because travel insurance is designed to protect you from unforeseen events.

Will I be covered if I need unexpected medical treatment while on a domestic cruise?

Yes. We can cover the unforeseen medical treatment that is provided to you whilst on a ship (including cruise ship, passenger ship, or passenger ferry) that sails within the territorial waters of New Zealand like Waiheke, Great Barrier, and Stewart Islands, but excluding the Cook Islands.

What is the difference between your domestic travel insurance plans?

We offer two domestic travel insurance plans: Options Domestic, and Options Domestic Cancellation. Each plan varies in price because the coverage options are different. To help you choose the plan that best suits your budget and travel needs, have a read of our Policy Wording.

Our Options Domestic Plan can protect against expenses arising from incidents like lost luggage, cancellation, and rental vehicle insurance excess. You are covered for the duration of your selected travel dates. Our Options Domestic Plan is the most comprehensive coverage available for trips within New Zealand.

As for our Options Domestic Cancellation Plan can provide cover for costs incurred if you unexpectedly need to cancel your trip. These expenses may include pre-booked tours, flights, or non-refundable deposits. Keep in mind that cover will only apply if your reason for cancellation falls within the terms and conditions of the Policy Wording.

Do I have to be a certain distance from home for cover to apply?

Yes. For your domestic policy coverage to apply, you need to be 100 km from your home in New Zealand. This applies to both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip plans.

What is a domestic Annual Multi-Trip policy and how does it work?

If you are a frequent traveller then you may want to consider a domestic Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policy. This option provides coverage for an unlimited number of domestic journeys within a 12-month period. Each individual trip must be more than 100 km from your home and cannot exceed 30 days in duration.

To purchase a domestic AMT plan online, enter the dates of your first trip into our quote box to generate a free quote. You will then be able to view the price of an AMT policy as well as the cost of a Single Trip plan. Please note that you do not need to enter a 12-month date range into the quote box to get a price for an AMT policy.
