#1. New York City, USA

As the backdrop to so many movies, Christmas in New York is simply magical!

If you are lucky enough to be spending the festive season in the Big Apple, there are so many festive activities to enjoy such as strolling through Central Park, ice-skating (and braving the crowds) under the tree at the Rockefeller Centre, and shopping until you drop at the Christmas grottos that pop up in the city’s department stores.

While you’re not guaranteed to see snowflakes fall from the sky on Christmas Day, all of the other attractions will more than make up for it.

If you choose to stick around for New Year’s Eve, you can’t go past the excitement of the ball drop in Times Square.

#2. Whistler, Canada

There are two things that Canada does really well - one is poutine and the other is Christmas.

Christmas in Canada is on a whole other level and with the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, you simply can’t pass up this experience!

While Whistler has an excellent reputation for skiing, it also turns into a snowy Christmas wonderland in December.

You’ll need some serious cold weather gear but you won’t be hard-pressed to find a blazing fire and some s’mores roasting over a fire. Stroll through the lit-up village and you’ll feel as though you’ve entered the North Pole.

#3. Reykjavik, Iceland

Tucked up nice and close to the Arctic Circle where Santa lives, Iceland is a wonderful place to spend a white Christmas.

If you’re not a fan of crowds and the last minute shopping rush, you won’t find any of it in the rugged wilderness of Iceland.

What you will find are natural hot springs to soak in, spectacular waterfalls and a good shot of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Who needs Christmas lights when you can see one of the most coveted light shows on earth?!

As for snow, Iceland certainly doesn’t skip out in that regard. You’ll be covered knee-deep in it during winter.

#4. The Swiss Alps, Switzerland

When all of the houses tucked away in the mountains already look like gingerbread houses throughout the year, it doesn’t take too many lights to turn the whole area into a Christmas masterpiece.

The Swiss Alps are a trendy location amongst skiers and snowboarders, but the mountain towns take on a new kind of charm at Christmas time.

You’re basically guaranteed to be covered in the snow during winter, so you don’t have to worry about not getting the full white Christmas experience.

Most towns will have visits from Santa, sleigh rides, and plenty of mulled wine to go around. Switzerland one of the best places to enjoy the silly season.

#5. Helsinki, Finland

Finland is considered the “official” home of Santa Claus and many make the journey on chartered flights to the far North to sit on the old man's knee.

But you don’t have to venture all the way into the Arctic tundra to have a snowy Christmas, as it often starts snowing in November in Helsinki.

A city known for its trendy design, Helsinki gives Christmas a unique edge.

It’s not as quaint or cosy as the countryside, but what it lacks in traditional charm, it definitely makes up for in cool bars, quirky traditions and Christmas markets galore.
