Protect your New Zealand holiday with domestic cover

Most people know the value of international travel insurance. Did you know it is just as important to have domestic cover when travelling around New Zealand? Why buy domestic travel insurance?

Unexpected circumstances that leave you out of pocket can easily happen when you’re travelling domestically. Yes, your luggage can be stolen in Christchurch – just as it can in Cairo. And if your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip? It does not matter if you were travelling to Auckland or Amsterdam.

Here are some real-life Cover-More stories of customers who were able to claim under their domestic policy:

  • An airline lost a customer’s suitcase and the items were not recoverable. Luggage Claim Value: $2,500
  • A customer’s rental vehicle was written off after a third-party collision. Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Claim Value: $4,000

There are always risks when you travel even on domestic trips. Find out how affordable our Domestic Options Plan cover can be by getting a quote online or call our team on (0800) 500 225. We can help you find the plan that best suits your needs.

Types of domestic cover

At Cover-More, we offer domestic cover for travel within New Zealand via our Options Plan. You can choose from either the Domestic Options Plan (available on both Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policies) or the Domestic Cancellation Options Plan (available on Single Trip policies only). Both plans currently have a $25 excess that applies to each claimable event.

You can customise your domestic travel insurance policy to best suit you and your travel plans, including Snow Sports cover for skiing and snowboarding trips, and increasing your luggage limits to better protect your valuables.

Our Domestic Options Plan includes benefits that can cover:

  • Travel delays
  • Trip cancellation or amendments
  • Luggage and travel documents
  • Rental vehicle insurance excess
  • Loss of income
  • Personal liability

...and more.

If you have a tight budget, our Domestic Cancellation Options Plan offers basic travel insurance that can protect you against the loss of prepaid deposits and cancellation fees. No other benefits apply to Domestic Cancellation policies. It can cover you for:

  • Additional Expenses, and Amendment or Cancellation costs up to $1,500

If you are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand, consider an Annual Multi-Trip policy.

If you purchase an Annual Multi-Trip policy, any trip more than 100 km from your home – or any trip closer to home that includes at least one night of paid accommodation with an accommodation supplier (e.g. a hotel, serviced apartment, or peer to peer service such as Airbnb) – is protected. To help find the right travel insurance call us on (0800) 500 225.

Cancellation

Cover-More policies can offer coverage in case you need to cancel your trip within New Zealand for an unexpected reason. The Domestic Options Plan has a benefit for amendments and cancellation costs up to $10,000. For a lower premium, you can select the Domestic Cancellation Options Plan. This provides cancellation coverage up to $1,500. Make sure you read the Policy Wording documents so you are aware of what is and is not covered by our travel insurance.

Medical cover

Our Domestic Options Plan can provide you with cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. This is for treatment provided in New Zealand. It only applies up to 12 months from when you suffered a disabling injury, sickness or disease. Travel insurance protects you from unforeseen events. Routine medical or dental treatments, prenatal visits and continuation of treatments are not covered.

For existing medical condition cover information, please read the “Cover for existing medical conditions” section below.

Cover for existing medical conditions

We automatically cover a range of existing medical conditions - including asthma, epilepsy, gastric reflux and more. Read the Policy Wording for a full list of the conditions we automatically cover. If your existing medical conditions are not all automatically covered, you may complete an online medical assessment to determine if cover is available. If your assessment is accepted, cover may be added and an additional premium may apply. Other travel insurance benefits unrelated to your existing medical condition still apply, even if cover cannot be provided for your specific condition/s.

Domestic cruises

Cruises are a great holiday option for families, seniors and everyone else in between. If you are about to set sail on a domestic cruise, consider purchasing travel insurance.

All our domestic policies automatically include cover for domestic cruises so you can sit back and enjoy the sea breeze.

Did you know that any accidents or injuries on board the ship are not covered by ACC? The cost of transporting you home won’t be covered by ACC either. That is where travel insurance comes in! Consider taking out a Cover-More travel insurance plan with cruise cover before you begin your voyage.

Travelling while pregnant

Being pregnant does not necessarily mean you have to stop travelling. At Cover-More, we can provide travel insurance for pregnancy up to the 24th week (23 weeks, 6 days) for serious, unexpected pregnancy complications. Cover is limited. If you are buying travel insurance while pregnant, you will need to fill in a medical assessment to apply for cover if:

  • You have experienced complications with your current pregnancy or a previous one;
  • It is a multiple pregnancy e.g. twins or triplets; or
  • Conception was medically assisted e.g. using fertility treatment such as IVF or prescription fertility medication.

If you purchased your travel insurance before finding out you were pregnant, you will not need to do anything. Keep in mind that you will have to provide supporting documentation from your doctor if you become unfit to travel and need to claim for cancellation.

Keep in mind that there is no cover for childbirth or the health of a newborn child on any of our plans. However, our other policy benefits can help safeguard your trip against expenses arising from lost luggage, travel delays and cancellation.

Why not consider a domestic holiday if you want to squeeze in a babymoon and take one last trip? It is a great way to relax and see more of our beautiful country. Make sure you are aware of any  airline restrictions for pregnant travellers before booking your getaway.

Senior travellers

Now that you have retired and your family have flown the nest, your ‘golden years’ are an ideal time to see the world. Start with domestic destinations that you have always wanted to see. At Cover-More, we can provide quality seniors travel insurance if you are younger than 100 years old. Have a chat to us about coverage options by calling (0800) 500 225 or get a  quote online.

Rental vehicle insurance excess cover

A great way to see New Zealand is by hitting the road! For your next domestic holiday, you may want to consider hiring a rental vehicle. Our Domestic Options Plan automatically provides up to $10,000 cover if you become liable to pay a rental vehicle insurance excess. Keep in mind that no cover for rental vehicle insurance excess is available under the Domestic Cancellation Options Plan.

Our rental vehicle insurance excess cover applies if you:

  • Hire a rental car;
  • Are the nominated driver on the rental vehicle agreement;
  • Are in control of the vehicle in the instance it is damaged or stolen; and
  • Have comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the rental vehicle during the hire period.

As Cover-More will cover the rental car excess up to the policy limit; you may not have to pay an extra fee to the rental car company to reduce your excess. This means more money in your pocket to spend while on holidays!

Please keep in mind that under Cover-More plans, we will not pay for:

  • Any damage or theft, arising from the operation of a rental car in violation of the terms of the rental agreement.
  • Administration costs or loss of use penalties.

We strongly encourage you to read the Policy Wording so you are aware of what is included in the plans.

For the full list of types of rental vehicles we provide excess cover for – including cars, campervans/motorhomes, and four-wheel drives – please consult the Policy Wording.

Self-driving holidays in New Zealand

Did you know our Domestic Options Plan also provides cover for self-driving holidays? If you’re driving your personal vehicle with New Zealand, we provide cover for your personal vehicle insurance excess while you’re travelling.

Note: this cover only applied if you have comprehensive car or motorcycle insurance for your own vehicle.
